Craniosacral Therapy is a complementary therapeutic treatment, which targets the body and mind in a holistic way. Background

The bones of the skull and the spine, in particular the sacrum, together with the membranes of the brain and the medulla form a unity, in which the cerebrospinal fluid (liquor) pulses. This so called “craniosacral system” (from cranium: skull, and sacrum) is liable to slight movement, which can be felt by the therapist through manual touch. Physical pain (such as headache, back pain, or traumatic injuries) or psychosomatic discomfort induces a change in these cranio-sacral movements, which provides indication for the therapeutic treatment.

The origin of Craniosacral Therapy lies within Osteopathy. In the early 20th century, the American doctors A. T. Still and W. G. Sutherland investigated the movements of all bones and connective tissue and their reference axes. As a result of these insights, Still and Sutherland developed “Cranial Osteopathy”. The term “Craniosacral Therapy” was introduced for the first time by the American osteopath Dr. J. E. Upledger in the 70th year of the last century. This term is now widely used.
