Myofascial Release®

Myofascial Release® is a manual therapeutic treatment that targets the body’s fascia. Through treatment of deep restrictions in the connective tissue, the flexibility of this tissue improves and restricted or blocked movements in the joints are loosened and released. As the fascia and the autonomic nervous system are closely connected with each other, working on the connective tissue encourages the entire body to relax. Although the fascia and their muscles are the focus of Myofascial Release®, other connective tissue may be treated as well.

Background

Fascia is soft connective tissue that surrounds, supports and protects most structures in the human body, including the muscles. There are close interactions between fascia and the nervous system (both autonomic and central nervous system), endocrine system, the respiratory system, the digestive tract, and the Craniosacral system.

Restrictions in the fascia can be caused, amongst others, by accidents or traumatic injuries and have manifold impacts on other tissue and viscera. Tension or restrictions within the fascia affect the flexibility of different zones of the connective tissue, which ultimately will impair metabolic processes. Sooner or later, this will lead to painful syndromes, such as the myofascial pain syndrome.
